Celebrating at Home

It's true that I've spent most of my time during the past two months making things for others to celebrate the winter holidays. But life at home still goes on, and behind the scenes I've been able to steal moments throughout the day to work on festive things with my family for our own celebrations.

[ABOVE] Making gift tags: A little cutting, simple tiny stitching, typing, gluing, hole punching and—finally—a loop of candy cane string to make them come together all so perfectly.

[ABOVE] Forcing bulbs so that in mid-winter we will have a lovely show of paper whites.

[ABOVE] Using Kata Golda tea cups to make votive candles — these are made from bee's wax (which the cat loves). More uses for tea cups.

[ABOVE] Making owl ornaments: This is actually the very tree in my yard where we hear a barn owl—it's a fairly regular happening late in the night. It wakes us and we rush to look out the window, but never see it. But we are quite sure that the startling, screeching sounds are coming from this tree.

As the last of the holiday orders safely make their way to their new homes, I can sit back and properly enjoy the holidays with my family and friends. It's been a wonderfully busy year, and I'm so thankful for all the support that I've received from my customers, my publishers, friends—and most importantly—my ever-patient family.

I hope you're looking to all the new adventures that 2011 will bring as much as I am. But for now, rest. Relax. Have a peaceful holiday, and a happy new year.

The Home Stretch

It's been a whirlwind week — my trip to Los Angeles last weekend was fun, and a dose of sunshine was just what I needed. OhMa Felt, maker of the hand-dyed wool felt I use on all my projects, did an amazing job coordinating our shared booth at Renegade Craft Fair, for which I am forever thankful. Our booth was overflowing with handmade items, and we had a steady stream of visitors.

I returned home early Monday to a large personalized holiday order, just in time to make the ordering deadlines. Today, 12/16/10, is the last day to order and receive items by 12/24/10 via UPS Ground — but I'll still be accepting orders through 12/20/10 for expedited air shipping in time for delivery by 12/24/10.

My many mornings of rising way before dawn (5 a.m. is a late start for me these days) are paying off and I'm all set for my last holiday craft fair of the season. Kata Golda will be at the Bazaar Girls Holiday Craft Fair this weekend (December 18–19) in Port Townsend, WA, offering felt ornaments, letterpress albums, stuffed companions other gifts alongside other local artisans. Undertown Coffee is hosting, providing a cozy space for the 2-day event.

After that things will begin to ease up, and I'm already looking forward to the time I've set aside to slow down, focus on my own holiday preparations, and enjoy some time with friends and family. I hope you're able to do the same.

Kata Golda Holiday Craft Fair Tour (2010)

Today I get to take the day off and play: I'm heading to Seattle to see all the wonderful handmade goodness at Urban Craft Uprising. I'm sure more than a few things will find a way to follow me home.

Then next week I fly down to L.A., where it's my turn to be behind the table. Kata Golda will be at L.A.'s Renegade Holiday Craft Fair (December 11-12), with lots of handmade felt goodness for sale. I'll also be signing copies of my craft book Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt. Look for me next to my pal OhMa Felt, maker of all that lovely hand-dyed wool felt I use in my work.

Following that, I return to Port Townsend just in time for the Bazaar Girls Holiday Craft Fair (December 18-19), where I'll be selling items from my holiday collection, including these new felt ornament DIY kits, currently available only on Etsy.
