Favorite New Things

Why is it that when I am feeling the absolute busiest, I decide to delve into something new?

Is it because my hands are occupied with familiar tasks, allowing my mind to wander? Or is it the knowledge that as the holidays approach, I don't need to focus as much on finding creative ways to promote my business and can instead use that energy toward the actualization of something out of the idea book?

Or — and this might be the heart of it — is it the limited amount of time I have right now to devote to the exploration of new ideas, that makes it so easy? If I lose those perimeters, I fear I'd get lost in the seemingly boundless amount of time I have available — falling victim to ease of procrastination, and not respecting that time as a gift. As I jump from deadline to deadline right now, stealing a moment to explore new ideas is all the more precious, and I savor those opportunities — much more than I would if I had all the time in the world.

Whatever the reason, it just happens — ideas pop in, and shout for my attention. And should I complain, really, about how they arrive at the most inconvenient times? Because really, that time is better spent bringing those new ideas to life.

One of my favorite new things from my idea book is a felt appliqué wall hanging. I needed something to give as a baby gift, and took inspiration from the characters I use on my felt patch photo albums. Using hand-dyed wool felt, I cut out the animal designs and then hand-stitched the scenes to a felt patch. The patch is then mounted on a 5.5" x 5.5" piece of wood, ready for hanging on a wall.

[ABOVE] From idea to production: one of my clients has already ordered a series of custom wall hangings. Perhaps as I get into the groove of working on these, the idea cycle will continue and new ideas will reveal themselves.

[ABOVE] Another custom order of mouse and monkey wall hangings.

[ABOVE] New item: This new wall-hanging design of 2 cats is only available on Etsy.

In other news, life just got busier: I've been accepted as a vendor at the Renegade Holiday Craft Fair, taking place in LA December 11-12, 2010. See details and learn more about the classes and fairs I'll be a part of this holiday season here.
