Celebrating at Home

It's true that I've spent most of my time during the past two months making things for others to celebrate the winter holidays. But life at home still goes on, and behind the scenes I've been able to steal moments throughout the day to work on festive things with my family for our own celebrations.

[ABOVE] Making gift tags: A little cutting, simple tiny stitching, typing, gluing, hole punching and—finally—a loop of candy cane string to make them come together all so perfectly.

[ABOVE] Forcing bulbs so that in mid-winter we will have a lovely show of paper whites.

[ABOVE] Using Kata Golda tea cups to make votive candles — these are made from bee's wax (which the cat loves). More uses for tea cups.

[ABOVE] Making owl ornaments: This is actually the very tree in my yard where we hear a barn owl—it's a fairly regular happening late in the night. It wakes us and we rush to look out the window, but never see it. But we are quite sure that the startling, screeching sounds are coming from this tree.

As the last of the holiday orders safely make their way to their new homes, I can sit back and properly enjoy the holidays with my family and friends. It's been a wonderfully busy year, and I'm so thankful for all the support that I've received from my customers, my publishers, friends—and most importantly—my ever-patient family.

I hope you're looking to all the new adventures that 2011 will bring as much as I am. But for now, rest. Relax. Have a peaceful holiday, and a happy new year.

The Home Stretch

It's been a whirlwind week — my trip to Los Angeles last weekend was fun, and a dose of sunshine was just what I needed. OhMa Felt, maker of the hand-dyed wool felt I use on all my projects, did an amazing job coordinating our shared booth at Renegade Craft Fair, for which I am forever thankful. Our booth was overflowing with handmade items, and we had a steady stream of visitors.

[ABOVE] The Kata Golda / OhMa Felt booth at the holiday Renegade Craft Fair in L.A., December 11–12, 2010. View more photos.

I returned home early Monday to a large personalized holiday order, just in time to make the ordering deadlines. Today, 12/16/10, is the last day to order and receive items by 12/24/10 via UPS Ground — but I'll still be accepting orders through 12/20/10 for expedited air shipping in time for delivery by 12/24/10.

My many mornings of rising way before dawn (5 a.m. is a late start for me these days) are paying off and I'm all set for my last holiday craft fair of the season. Kata Golda will be at the Bazaar Girls Holiday Craft Fair this weekend (December 18–19) in Port Townsend, WA, offering felt ornaments, letterpress albums, stuffed companions other gifts alongside other local artisans. Undertown Coffee is hosting, providing a cozy space for the 2-day event.

After that things will begin to ease up, and I'm already looking forward to the time I've set aside to slow down, focus on my own holiday preparations, and enjoy some time with friends and family. I hope you're able to do the same.

Kata Golda Holiday Craft Fair Tour (2010)

Today I get to take the day off and play: I'm heading to Seattle to see all the wonderful handmade goodness at Urban Craft Uprising. I'm sure more than a few things will find a way to follow me home.

Then next week I fly down to L.A., where it's my turn to be behind the table. Kata Golda will be at L.A.'s Renegade Holiday Craft Fair (December 11-12), with lots of handmade felt goodness for sale. I'll also be signing copies of my craft book Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt. Look for me next to my pal OhMa Felt, maker of all that lovely hand-dyed wool felt I use in my work.

[DIY] Felt Holiday Ornaments

It's hard to believe that 7 months have passed since I first started filling orders for felt Christmas ornaments; in the midst of all the apple blossoms the winter holidays were a lifetime away.

Now they are more relevant to the season and I have a renewed fondness of them. I've taken 4 of those ornament designs (Penguin, Owl, Snowman, Gingerbread Man) and turned them into DIY kits, complete with instructions and materials — including the same thick, hand-dyed wool felt I use on all my projects. They measure about 4" tall when finished, include a felt loop from which to hang them, and are easy, quick and fun to make.

Right now I am only selling them on Etsy — if they are well-received I will incorporate them into my next catalog's holiday section. They are a fun activity with friends, a gift for a DIYer, and nice for hanging on a tree or even as a wall decoration.

Thankful for Little Details

Everything's ready to go for this week's trip to Portland, and in the more quiet moments of the morning I've been preparing for Thanksgiving. I love preparing food for friends and loved ones, and treasure the time spent around the table.

This year I've been embroidering organic tea towels for the event with drawings from my sketchbook...they will make nice little gifts for my hosts. They are inspired by the little details I appreciate, that too often are easily overlooked: the last pieces of flowers hanging on for one more day, the abundant mushrooms on the forest floor and trees, a bird napping on a branch.

[ABOVE] Hand-stitched mushrooms on a green tea towel made of hem/organic cotton.

[ABOVE] This soft red embroidered flower tea towel captures the image of the last flowers of the season, hanging on to their stems by a thread.

Kata Golda's Going to Portland!

What a busy day! Today I received a request to express ship 2 personalized stuffed mouse companions over to The Wall Street Journal for their holiday gift guide... and how could I not drop everything for that? I also sent out an order that was 26 boxes and weighed 1200 lbs... and that was only part of the order! Then there's the Hanukkah order rush...and the last minute scrambling to fill last minute orders. The holiday starts on December 1 this year, so it's really coming up fast.

But in the midst of all this, things are coming together quite smoothly for my trip to Portland in a few weeks:
I can't wait to get down there and let the fun begin — it will be a nice little vacation for me. I'm splitting my "work time" between Egg Press and Modern Domestic, with a plans to duck into Bolt Fabric for some long-overdue fabric browsing!

Apples

Fall is all about apples at my house, and harvesting them is a community event. I have a few trees (does that mean I have an orchard?), but we also glean them from around town. People are happy to invite you into their yards to pick from their trees before they fall to the ground — there is such glorious abundance, and the possibilities are delightfully endless.
