Back from NYC

I'm back from the big city, jumping back into my studio with the trip undigested and little time to reflect the wonderful way it all played out. Lots and lots of walking and watching and listening to the city, punctuated by café sits with my little friend and my stitching.

I come home with a feeling of great appreciation for Leslie at STC Craft, who arranged two stitching events while I was in New York City:

ETSY CRAFT NIGHT

The first was a demonstration at Etsy's Craft Night, where the big, wooden tables quickly cluttered up with felt, scissors and thread...and were surrounded by conversation and community. It was a great turn-out, both in the real space (yes, Etsy is a place!) and virtually with the live webcast.

Thanks goes to Julie at Etsy for making the workshop a success, and also to all of the people who attended. If you missed it, I've posted a link to the webcast so that you and your friends can view the felt photo pocket demo from that day.

There are also photos from the workshop on my Kata Golda Fan Page; here are a few that I took:

PURL SOHO WORKSHOP

The second event was a full workshop at Purl, a shop full of friendly, helpful folks and the most inspiring fabrics and yarns — a stitcher's dream. Thanks goes to Nikki, who helped make it a cozy evening spent making sewing tool pockets and finger puppets (two of the DIY projects from my book).

Upon my return to my mossy little seaside town, I can feel from the chill of the wind that fall has arrived. The golden leaves now cover the green grass, which is sprinkled with vibrant orange pumpkins, ready to be picked.

It's good to be home.

Etsy Video: Felt Photo Pockets with Kata Golda

Thank you to everyone who was able to show up (both in person and online) for my wool felt craft demo at Etsy on yesterday.

For those of you that missed it, here's a re-broadcast, in 2 parts, of the live webcast demo on how to make a felt photo pocket. There were some problems with sound, but hopefully these 2 videos will help fill in the gaps.

VIDEO LINKS:

Felt Photo Pockets with Kata Golda (Part 2)

You can also find instructions in Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt; and if you're looking for materials I offer DIY kits for most projects in the book.

Oct. 19: Kata Golda live demo in the Etsy Labs

Holding a photograph in your hand is a special and intimate treat, and it is especially rare these days, as so many pictures are stored and shared digitally instead of in an album.

A felt photo pocket, like the one shown above, is a lovely way to keep a special stash of photos on hand. It makes a perfect gift for any family member or friend who appreciates this old fashioned pleasure.

The complete instructions for how to make a felt photo pocket can be found in Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt — and if you need wool felt and thread, I now offer a photo pocket supplies kit to go along with the book, in both the dog design and a botanical design (show below).

But if you're better at learning hands-on, then join me at Etsy's Craft Night on Monday, October 19 and I'll show you how to make your own felt photo pocket.

You can stop by the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn anytime on Oct. 19 between 4-8 p.m. ET at 55 Washington Street, Suite 512 (Brooklyn, New York) — or you can watch the live demo online, in Etsy's Virtual Labs, at 5 p.m. ET that day.

See you on Monday!

Kata Golda's on Tour

The little finger puppets from my book are becoming quite the rock stars — complete with a world tour.

In the past week they've been to:

Manhattan, NYC, where they met up with Alicia Kachmar's Safety Cones for an urban photoshoot (see the full shoot on Flickr).

Soho, for an interview at Purl Patchwork, where Kata Golda will be teaching a workshop on October 21, 2009 (to register, call 212-420-8798).

Seattle, Washington for a some craft-planning with Wise Craft. Perhaps the "Holds Everything Bucket" will be her next DIY project?

Austin, Texas, where Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt got a "paws up" book review from Etienne Lepine in The Statesman.

Wellesley, Massachusetts, to show artist Abby Glassenberg of While She Naps how to make her own felt journal.

Where will their next appearance be? Looks like it's back to NYC for some demos and workshops:

October 19, 2009 | Craft Night at Etsy Labs
Sign up to attend in person, or watch the live demo online (5pm EST / 2p.m. PST).

Fall is in the air! This evening we will be autumn-inspired felt projects with Kata Golda, artist and craft book author. Drop in anytime between 4-8pm to craft with us. Instructions are given throughout the night as participants arrive. So don't worry, if you swing by after work at 6, for example, you won't be missing out on the demo.

Or stop by for our weekly Craft Night in our online, interactive classroom, the Virtual Labs, for a live demo via webcam at 5 p.m. ET.

October 21, 2009 | Purl Patchwork

Kata Golda will explain her unique hand-stitching techniques and will walk students through making a tool pouch and finger puppet from her new book Kata Golda's Hand-stitched Felt. No sewing experience is required! The class fee is $45.00 and students can purchase a materials kit for the class which includes everything you need for the projects including her book for an additional $35. To sign up, call the store at 212-420-8798.

By then, it might be time for these guys to take a little nap before they head out on the road again (look for them in Portland, Oregon, in early January 2010).

New at Kata Golda: Felt Halloween Items

Fall's off to a busy start, and any moment I can steal away to do my stitching is a cherished one.

Often that comes in the early (and I do mean early) hours of the day, before even my friends on the east coast are awake. These are the hours my mind is most clear, and I'm truly focused on the more complex parts of my creative work and able to get perspective on the day to come. When I hear my daughter's footsteps come down the stairs, I know the rest of the world is awake and it's time to turn to the task of making breakfast, calling customers, and getting orders together. The whirlwind of the day has begun.

With a trip to NYC coming up and the holiday season just around the corner, those quiet morning times to myself will be all the more special. All the prep work for my Etsy workshop is done, and I'm getting started on filling Halloween orders.

This is really the first time I've offered Halloween-specific items, and I've already received a great response to my felt crowns and wands—popular with wizards and fairy princesses (and even their cats).

Speaking of cats, I've also created a new special black cat edition of the stuffed companion cat, adorned with a small pumpkin on its shirt. Like all of the stuffed companions, it's available plain or personalized, as a boy or a girl. Your hand-stitched message goes inside the pumpkin.

Of course it wouldn't be a Kata Golda Halloween if there wasn't a felt photo album involved. The felt-covered pumpkin brag book holds 36 photos and is decorated with a felt pumpkin design that's similar to the one on my pumpkin enclosure card. It can be personalized with a hand-stitched name or message (I chose "little pumpkin" for my little girl's album).

Looking back on all of these items, it's clear that I've once I've been inspired by my garden, and I've used pumpkins quite a bit in these designs. Their shape and color are a reminder that fall's fading light does not mean a loss of vibrance.

Harvest Time

I am feeling a bit like an instruction manual at this moment as opposed to a novel; all the activity of the past week has been a bit overwhelming. But if I stay on task and follow the morning check list, that feeling quickly melts away.

That said, it is an exciting moment for Kata Golda! So many things have happened this past week, with many more things on the horizon — including a live craft demo at Etsy's Brooklyn office.

Here's everything that's going on:

Kata Golda's New 2010-2011 Collection

I'm pleased to announce that my new 2010-2011 collection is ready, with printed catalogs making their way into the world and a newly refreshed web site open for shopping.

I have a lot of new designs for classic Kata Golda favorites, such as the felt patch photo albums and tooth fairy pillows, and have introduced many new items as well. One that I am really excited about is the do-it-yourself kits, which provide materials for the patterns in my new book.

[BELOW] The Stuffed Dog (Boy) Kit comes with all the materials you need to make one of the stuffed animal projects from Kata Golda's Hand-Stitched Felt.

Book Release: Kata Golda's Hand-Stitched Felt

My first craft book came out on October 1, and the team at STC Craft | Melanie Falick Books put together a lovely short video that stars the mice from the book's finger puppet project.

October 19: Kata Golda at Craft Night at Etsy Labs

Etsy kindly invited me to lead a workshop at Craft Night, their open-house gathering of crafters that's held weekly in their Brooklyn office. Join me there at 4 p.m. on Monday, October 19 for a workshop on how to make two felt projects from my book: photo pockets and business card holders.

Sign up to attend in person, or watch the live video feed on Etsy's Virtual Lab at 5 p.m. EST (2 p.m. PST).

Please note: in order to watch Etsy's video feed, you must log in, so plan accordingly. You can register for your free account at Etsy.com.

[BELOW] The photo pocket (left) and business card holder (right), from Kata Golda's Hand-Stitched Felt. Both projects will be featured at Etsy's Craft Night on October 19, 2009.

Thank you to everyone who helped and worked hard to make all these things possible; your tireless efforts are greatly appreciated.

Happy stitching!

Kata Golda's now on Facebook

With all the new things happening at Kata Golda this week (mailing of the 2010-2011 catalog, the soon-to-be-released web site, a new craft book), why not add one more?

And so I announce the latest addition to my collection of social media tools: Kata Golda's Facebook fan page, soon to be filled with announcements about new work, appearances, and photos of my studio.

Now if only I could add hand-stitching to give the page that special Kata Golda touch...
